1. Parx Casino was the second operator in Pennsylvania to apply for a sports betting license. Ever since US sports betting got the green light, Parx has hit the ground running. Parx continued its trend of coming in second when it launched the second PA online betting.

The $200,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes (Gr. 2) on New Year’s Day, the $200,000 San Gabriel Stakes (Gr. 2), and $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes (Gr. 2) at Santa Anita run on back-to-back-to-back days. Race 5

Distance:6 ½ Furlongs
Purse:$41,000

In the second biggest race of the afternoon in Philadelphia, Race 5 will run for 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Nine horses are expected to participate, with Dauntless Gal and Beautiful Grace runners to pay attention to in this event. Dauntless Gal has finished in the top-3 in three out of four outings. In the race she didn’t, it was in a stakes race for $100,000 in the Tempted Stakes.

In Dauntless Gal’s win, she defeated Restofthestory by a length for a $65,000 purse. Since then, she has gone 3rd, 5th, 2nd. Dauntless Gal was in good form in her most recent showing, she placed 2nd behind Beautiful Grace by 5 ¼ lengths in a $41,000 event. Good form, but nothing like her debut when she won by a length for a $65,000 purse on August 8.

We’ll see if Dauntless Gal responds in good order on Wednesday, but should be close at the wire. Beautiful Grace is in terrific form at the moment. She is a winner in three of her previous four performances. Beautiful Grace edged out Dauntless Gal by 5 ¼ lengths in that $41,000 assignment on December 7. The only race she hasn’t won since the summer was the $75,000 Presque Isle Debutante Stakes on October 5. A winning run is likely for Beautiful Grace in Race 5.

Race 7

Distance:7 Furlongs
Purse:$40,000

Race 7 is a fairly sizable race for a $40,000 purse on Wednesday afternoon. Nine horses are expected to travel 7 furlongs on the dirt in this race. Grit’n’grind and La Waun should be involved in the stretch run here. Grit’n’grind is 4 for 52 in his career, with the fourth win of his career coming most recently on December 8.

After a winless drought which spanned across 21 races, Grit’n’grind finally made it back to the winner’s circle. This win was over Owin I am by 3 lengths in a $23,000 event. The same form would put Grit’n’grind close despite the class hike, but might need a bit more to find a win in this race. La Waun should come on strong in this race.

La Waun has finished in the top-2 in six of his previous seven performances, including four wins. He has gone 1st, 1st, 2nd in his previous three trips, with a win on September 24 and November 25. Those were wins for La Waun by a half length and 2 ¾ lengths. In his most recent outing, La Waun placed 2nd behind I’m Busy for a $40,000 purse.

The only race that La Waun hasn’t raced well in was in the $100,000 Longacres Mile Handicap (Gr. 3) at Emerald Downs on September 10. Graded races might be too tough for him, but this race on Wednesday looks manageable. I’d side with La Waun at 3/1 on the morning-line.

Race 10

Distance:1 1/16 Miles
Purse:$15,000

Race 10 goes for 1 1/16 miles on the dirt for a $15,000 purse. Canoochee and Unbridledadventure should give solid efforts in this race for the top prize. Canoochee is 5 for 35 in her career and receiving a class drop today. She has finished 4th, 6th, 7th, 7th in her previous four outings. The last time she finished in the top-3 was 3rd on October 14 for a $24,000 purse. In her most recent showing, Canoochee finished 7th for a $22,000 purse in a disappointing effort. After stringing together several below average performances in a row, she gets a class drop to $15,000 on Wednesday.

Unbridledadventure is 11 for 50 in her career and coming off a bold bid on November 30 for a win. She defeated Midriven by 1 ½ lengths for a $15,000 purse. If she runs a similar race another win isn’t out of reach on Wednesday. The competition is not the toughest by any means in Race 10. It will depend on how much the class drop helps Canoochee. I don’t think it’s enough to get into the winner’s circle, but should garner better results. Instead, I will side with Unbridledadventure.

Even before the Supreme Court of the United States decided that limiting states the right to offer sports betting was unconstitutional, Pennsylvania was working on a huge expansive gaming bill.
